About the Book:
New York Times bestselling author Lysa TerKeurst unveils her heart amid shattering circumstances and shows readers how to live assured when life doesn’t turn out like they expected.
What do you do when God’s timing seems questionable, His lack of intervention hurtful, and His promises doubtful?
Life often looks so very different than we hoped or expected. Some events may simply catch us off guard for a moment, but others shatter us completely. We feel disappointed and disillusioned, and we quietly start to wonder about the reality of God’s goodness.
Lysa TerKeurst understands this deeply. But she’s also discovered that our disappointments can be the divine appointments our souls need to radically encounter God. In It’s Not Supposed to Be This Way, Lysa invites us into her own journey of faith and, with grit, vulnerability, and honest humor, helps us to:
* Stop being pulled into the anxiety of disappointment by discovering how to better process unmet expectations and other painful situations.
* Train ourselves to recognize the three strategies of the enemy so we can stand strong and persevere through unsettling relationships and uncertain outcomes.
* Discover the secret of being steadfast and not panicking when God actually does give us more than we can handle.
* Shift our suspicion that God is cruel or unfair to the biblical assurance that God is protecting and preparing us.
* Know how to encourage a friend and help her navigate hard realities with real help from God’s truth.
I’ve been wanting to read “It’s Not Supposed to Be This Way” by Lysa TerKeurst ever since I found out its release date. Then everyone started telling me I needed to read it. When I found out that one of my friends is planning on leading a bible study for the book in the near future, I knew it was time to purchase a copy. Most of you know I’m not very patient in waiting when it comes to books so of course, I’ve already read it. I’ve been going through a little bit of a rough time recently and the timing was perfect. Do you ever have those books that are placed in your life at just the right moment and was exactly what God wanted you to hear? Well, that’s the case with this one.
You see, we all have some kind of disappointments in our lives. Whether it is a job loss, lack of a job, single but wish for a spouse, widowed or grieving the death of a loved one, etc. Whatever it is that you’re currently going through right now, this is for you.
What stands out from other books is that Lysa TerKeurst is raw and honest. She personally went through it as she was writing the book so she speaks as a friend and as someone who totally gets it. She begins by dealing with feelings and then brings her readers to a deeper and impactful spiritual journey.
Warning though. It’s going to be an emotional rollercoaster. There were several chapters that I literally had to take my time with to unpack because it hit home and brought up issues I needed to deal with. While I read this individually, it would also make an excellent Bible study or book club read. It is perfect for discussion. I also think it would be excellent for counseling therapy sessions. It is definitely a keeper for my bookshelf that I will look back at over and over again.
My favorite parts that I loved were the “Going to the Well” that can be found at the end of each chapter. She gives you key points to remember, many of which I found myself underlining, and key verses to meditate on. The author also included questions to reflect on that were truly thought-provoking. She is both inspirational and encouraging but also challenges and convicts her readers.
Highly recommended for women who wish to become unstuck from their disappointments and grow in their spiritual walks with the Lord. I can’t wait to check out the companion Bible study for this book!
