When it comes to love and matters of the heart, she’s got a lot to learn.
Estate planner Penny Thornton loves dusting off items others gloss over, especially since she relates to feeling tossed aside for the “bright and shiny”. When her younger sister’s approaching wedding launches Penny back into the throes of her dysfunctional family, she decides to use the festivities to close the gap in their relationships—even if it means appeasing them and finally losing the few pounds they’ve hounded her about for years.
But she doesn’t expect to meet two very different men in the process. East Fisher, the personal trainer who personifies everything she believes she could never attain, and Jonah Black, a man who reminds her so much of herself. Both men are more than they appear at first glance, and both seem interested in her romantically.
As Penny uncovers their hidden layers, she discovers when it comes to love and matters of the heart, she’s got a lot to learn about estimating value.
At First Glance came about after a question floated through my mind: “They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but what if your heart needs glasses?” In fact, my earliest versions of this book I simply titled, The Beholder. But I’d been in this season of listening to friends try to define their worth by the world’s standards while also buying into them. They’d complain that people didn’t value them for what was on the inside while struggling with seeing past other’s veneers. I’ll admit, I did that at times too! But it all came down to seeing our own worth through God’s lens. He looks at our hearts … and once we understand it’s a heart issue, that changes our hearts which then changes our actions and thoughts. We’re able to see others in a new light. And we’re able to understand our true worth.
Because I’m a pantser (rather than plotting, the story develops as I’m writing) I wasn’t always sure where God was going with things, but this tug-o-war began between my heroine and the two male leads. Once I neared the very end, I saw how God used them to show the theme of discovering our worth in him versus finding it in the world. Then in edits, I was able to go back and deepen that thread. That’s what I find most exciting about creating with God. He’s unveiling the story through me as I go, so I have a-ha moments along the way. And I always have learning moments too! I’m never the same at the end of a book as when I started☺
