It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like… Christmas?

It’s only September and the Christmas books have arrived! Have you noticed that readers fall into two camps about this topic? They take this subject very seriously.

First, there’s the ‘bring it on folks.’ Let the holiday book binge begin and don’t let it stop! Then there are those readers who frown and become grumpy at the mere suggestion of reading about merry, cheer and good tidings when it’s still ninety-degrees outside.

Whatever your timeline opinion, Christmas books are popular. Print Christmas books even more so. They can be autographed by the author, wrapped and put under the Christmas tree, or in the case of a Harlequin Love Inspired book, tucked into a stocking to delight a reader on Christmas morning.

It’s only savvy marketing from both the traditional publishing and independent publishing business world to capitalize on this popularity by adding a few months to reader enjoyment. After all, once the season to be jolly is gone, right after Christmas until the end of the year, there’s a book sale slump. Pocketbooks have been emptied to purchase all those holiday presents. No one is buying books with wreaths and tinsel on the cover in January, no matter how much it’s snowing or how many partridges are in a pear tree.

I sympathize with those who cringe at the sight of Christmas books in September. I too, shook my head when my favorite Brach’s Mellocreme pumpkins showed up in the supermarket in August. But remember, you can always stock up on those early holiday reads and postpone your binge for long winter days with hot cocoa and homemade marshmallows. They’ll wait patiently on your To Be Read pile for you.

And on a random side note, Hallmark who now publishes books is already preparing to debut 34 new holiday films through their Hallmark Channel and Hallmark Movies and Mysteries. Hallmark Christmas Countdown begins moments after I finish those Brach Mellocreme Pumpkins. Around November fourth, 2018.

But what is it about Christmas books (and movies) that makes them so very popular anyhow? For starters, they put us in a festive mood. Who, except Scrooge, can frown and grouse when the songs of the season are playing? Holiday spirit, it turns out, is contagious. My joy and delight will rub off on you and so on and so forth. And we are guaranteed a happy ending with a holiday book, no matter what genre you pick up. That makes us feel good.

From Miracle on 34th Street, “Christmas isn’t just a day, it’s a frame of mind.” Hmm, so maybe we should start those Christmas book releases even earlier?

In truth, this isn’t only the season to be jolly. It’s the time of our dear Savior’s birth. The beginning of all that defines us as Christians. The start of the journey. We should be celebrating that love. “Christmas, my child, is love in action.” Dale Evans.

So whether you are an early holiday reader or a near holiday reader, I pray that there are many, many wonderful holiday reads in your future this season of joy.  May seasonal books bless you over and over. And don’t forget to bless others with the gift of books this year.

Well, of course, it’s time for a plug for my holiday book, Christmas with the Cowboy. Who could possibly resist a cranky former Navy SEAL, a spunky widow and a pair of identical twin toddlers? Emma Maxwell Norman overdoses in holiday cheer. From her accessories to her ugly Christmas sweaters. And she’s determined to spread that cheer to Zach Norman, her Scrooge-like brother-in-law.

Take a walk through the snow into the delightful holiday world of Big Heart Ranch where second chances and chocolate muffins are as plentiful as snowflakes. I promise that you won’t want to leave.

Now go ahead and tell me. Which reader are you? The reader who is looking for holiday books in September or the reader who offers a palm and turns away until winter is official on the calendar?

Either way, I love readers! Happy Early Christmas from me to all of you. And thank you to It’s Story Time with Van Daniker and JustRead Publicity Tours for hosting me and my enthusiasm. You can stop by my webpage for more news from Big Heart Ranch and holiday recipes.

  1. Thank you for being part of the JustRead Publicity Tour’s book tour for “Christmas with the Cowboy” by Tina Radcliffe. Adore this cover and can’t wait for the opportunity to read the book. Definitely on my TBR list.

I love Christmas theme books all year long. It’s a way to spread the holiday spirit and the joy it brings all year long. With the release of books each fall is a way to refresh that spirit and bring it to those that can’t seem to get it all year long.

  2. Tina, I’m a Christmas all year kind of person. I love reading holiday books to get into the spirit. Setting is important, so Big Heart Ranch and the snow are perfect to me. Plus a cup of cocoa by the fire with a TBR stack nearby would be great.
