June 2018 Book Haul!

June 2018 Book Haul!

Hi there! I can’t believe that June is already over!

That’s fine with me because that means it is officially summer! Summer is my favorite season of the year, not that I have a ton of experience with the different seasons because it’s pretty much summer all year long here in Florida.

Anywho, it’s time to reveal the June 2018 Book Haul! Are you curious to see what arrived in my mailbox? Good! Let’s get started!

  1. Never Stop Walking by Christina Rickardsson

Never Stop WalkingAn extraordinary memoir of one woman’s fight to find her true self between the life into which she was born and the one she was given.

Christiana Mara Coelho was born into extreme poverty in Brazil. After spending the first seven years of her life with her loving mother in the forest caves outside São Paulo and then on the city streets, where they begged for food, she and her younger brother were suddenly put up for adoption. When one door closed on the only life Christiana had ever known and on the woman who protected her with all her heart, a new one opened.

As Christina Rickardsson, she’s raised by caring adoptive parents in Sweden, far from the despairing favelas of her childhood. Accomplished and outwardly “normal,” Christina is also filled with rage over what she’s lost and having to adapt to a new reality while struggling with the traumas of her youth. When her world falls apart again as an adult, Christina returns to Brazil to finally confront her past and unlock the truth of what really happened to Christiana Mara Coelho.

A memoir of two selves, Never Stop Walking is the moving story of the profound love between families and one woman’s journey from grief and loss to survival and self-discovery.

I don’t normally read memoirs, but this one looked interesting. I won an e-book copy on Goodreads so I’m excited to check this out soon.

  2. Matchmaking for Beginners by Maddie Dawson

Matchmaking for BeginnersMarnie MacGraw wants an ordinary life—a husband, kids, and a minivan in the suburbs. Now that she’s marrying the man of her dreams, she’s sure this is the life she’ll get. Then Marnie meets Blix Holliday, her fiancé’s irascible matchmaking great-aunt who’s dying, and everything changes—just as Blix told her it would.

When her marriage ends after two miserable weeks, Marnie is understandably shocked. She’s even more astonished to find that she’s inherited Blix’s Brooklyn brownstone along with all of Blix’s unfinished “projects”: the heartbroken, oddball friends and neighbors running from happiness. Marnie doesn’t believe she’s anything special, but Blix somehow knew she was the perfect person to follow in her matchmaker footsteps.

And Blix was also right about some things Marnie must learn the hard way: love is hard to recognize, and the ones who push love away often are the ones who need it most.

This is Christian fiction but this looked adorable so I was super excited when I saw that I won an e-book copy on Goodreads. Then of course, I saw Carla Laureano reviewed it and it made me even more excited to check this out.

  3. The Hawaiian Discovery by Wanda E. Brunstetter and Jean Brunstetter

The Hawaiian DiscoveryAn Amish Woman Finds Love in Hawaii

Ellen Lambright mourned when her best friend, Mandy, moved from Indiana to Hawaii. But now Ellen has received the Amish church’s permission to go to Hawaii and help Mandy through challenging times. Rob Smith works on the Williams family’s organic farm, far from his past mistakes and burning regrets. When Ellen befriends Rob, the attraction is mutual, but her commitment to the Amish faith stands between them. Could a heartfelt discovery lead to forgiveness, reunion, and love? Or is Ellen’s destiny waiting for her in Indiana?

You’re probably wondering why this made this month’s list again since I received a physical copy from the publisher last month. Well, I somehow ended up winning an e-book copy on Goodreads well. I can’t wait to dig into this book soon! I mean Amish and Hawaii just made my reading world a little more interesting.

  4. A Vast and Gracious Tide by Lisa Carter

A Vast and Gracious TideA murder on the tranquil beaches of the Outer Banks puts two strangers on a path to uncover the truth

Caden Wallis has suffered several devastating blows that have left him reeling. He’s lost friends and now his girlfriend to the ravages of war. He arrives on the Outer Banks for one final mission—to thank the woman who sent him a quilt while he was recuperating from his wounds at Walter Reed Army Hospital.

McKenna Dockery knows all about loss. She lost her mother at a young age, and her father has never been the same since he came home from his own war. She juggles the family business, her ailing father, and an aging grandmother. Much to Caden’s surprise, she is the quilter—not some elderly lady. The quilt was something she’d begun for her future husband but shipped to the military hospital after the tragic death of her fiancé.

When a man is found snared in a net and murdered on McKenna’s property, she and Caden must work together to bring the killer to justice. Each must learn to trust the other, or no one will be safe in the tangled web of conspiracy, greed, and deceit lurking in the tidal marshlands of the Outer Banks. A nor’easter, a sea turtle named Cecil, and a surf-crazy hound named Ginger conspire to bring these two searching hearts together through the vast and gracious tide of God’s love.

I’m excited about this one. It looks like the perfect summer read filled with suspense and romance. I love that the main character is a war veteran as well so it makes me even more excited to check it out. I’m partnering with Just Reads Publicity in their Instagram Takeover Tour so make sure you’re following me on there so you won’t miss out on the fun!

  5. Falling for the Cowgirl by Tina Radcliffe

  6. Jane by the Book by Pepper D. Basham

Jane by the BookFour years ago, Jane Warwick escaped the shame and heartbreak of being jilted at the altar by becoming a housekeeper at the secluded Inn at Simeon Ridge. Predictable and quiet, the inn helps Jane find a place to heal and celebrates her strengths, where she is promoted to head housekeeper. But an unexpected visit to Bath, England, upsets Jane’s plans and sends her out of her comfort zone, directly into the harrowing path of historical detective author, Titus Stewart.

The only plans Titus sticks to are family holidays and the ones that send him careening into his story worlds, but when an uptight and nervous innkeeper stumbles into his life – and his latest novel – nonfiction begins to take on a much more interesting gleam.

As the unlikely pair delve into the mystery behind a one-hundred-and-fifty-year-old letter, will they both uncover a romance that stands the test of time?

I was told I had to meet Titus so I was given an e-book copy of this one from Pepper Basham. I cannot wait to check this out. Isn’t that cover super adorable and swoony? Ugh. I can’t wait. Thank you Pepper Basham for my review copy!

  7. Roar by Cora Cormack

RoarIn a land ruled and shaped by violent magical storms, power lies with those who control them.

Aurora Pavan comes from one of the oldest Stormling families in existence. Long ago, the ungifted pledged fealty and service to her family in exchange for safe haven, and a kingdom was carved out from the wildlands and sustained by magic capable of repelling the world’s deadliest foes. As the sole heir of Pavan, Aurora’s been groomed to be the perfect queen. She’s intelligent and brave and honorable. But she’s yet to show any trace of the magic she’ll need to protect her people.

To keep her secret and save her crown, Aurora’s mother arranges for her to marry a dark and brooding Stormling prince from another kingdom. At first, the prince seems like the perfect solution to all her problems. He’ll guarantee her spot as the next queen and be the champion her people need to remain safe. But the more secrets Aurora uncovers about him, the more a future with him frightens her. When she dons a disguise and sneaks out of the palace one night to spy on him, she stumbles upon a black market dealing in the very thing she lacks—storm magic. And the people selling it? They’re not Stormlings. They’re storm hunters.

Legend says that her ancestors first gained their magic by facing a storm and stealing part of its essence. And when a handsome young storm hunter reveals he was born without magic, but possesses it now, Aurora realizes there’s a third option for her future besides ruin or marriage.

She might not have magic now, but she can steal it if she’s brave enough.

Challenge a tempest. Survive it. And you become its master.

I’ve read some mixed reviews on this one, especially since this secular YA, but it sounded interesting. I also won a paperback copy in a Goodreads giveaway so I’m curious to check it out soon.

  9. The Forgotten Recipe by Amy Clipston

The Forgotten RecipeAfter losing her fiancé in a tragic accident, Veronica Fisher finds solace in the old recipes stored in her mother’s hope chest—and in a special visitor who comes to her bake stand to purchase her old-fashioned raspberry pies.

When an accident on the job steals Seth away from her, a heartbroken Veronica is certain she will never love—or be loved—again. Yet when she discovers a batch of forgotten recipes and opens a bake stand to sell her Mammi’s raspberry pies, Veronica picks up a regular customer  who gives her heart pause.

Jason Huyard was with Seth when he lost his life—a memory that haunts him still. So when he seeks out the grieving fiancée to convey his condolences, the last thing he expects—or wants—is to fall in love. Nonetheless, Jason soon finds himself visiting Veronica’s bake stand every week . . . and it’s for more than the raspberry pies.

Now, as Veronica’s heart thaws, Jason can’t bring himself to tell her he was there when Seth died. Can he ever reveal where he was on the day her life derailed? Or will his secret rob them of the second chance at love they both want?

This was available as free e-book for short time. Since I’m trying to convince myself to give more Amish fiction a chance, I decided to snag it.

  10. Raptor 6 by Ronie Kendig

Raptor 6Captain Dean Watters keeps his mission and his team in the forefront of his laser-like focus. So when Dean’s mission and team are threatened, his Special Forces training kicks into high gear. Zahrah Zarrick is a missionary teacher to Afghan children in Mazar-e Sharif. And a target. When Zahrah is captured because of her expertise in quantum cryptology, compromising the US military, Dean is forced to crack the lockbox around his heart—a move that might come at the highest cost.

I’ve been wanting to read Ronie Kendig’s books for a while now, especially since she is very pro-military, but I haven’t had a chance yet. Then I that the e-book is currently available for free, I decided it was my time to check it out. I’m so excited!

  11. One Deadly Summer by Sébastien Japrisot

One Deadly Summer‘A master of psychological suspense ’ New York Times

Beautiful newcomer, Elle, has turned the head of every man in the village. But it’s Fiorimond, the local mechanic, who wants her more.
After just one date she moves in with him and his family. As Fiorimond starts to wonder if he’s doing the right thing, he has no idea that Elle is planning to avenge a terrible crime from the past…

Set in the 1970s, and available in English again for the first time in decades, this is a true classic of French suspense.

I am not sure about this one. I received this arc randomly in the mail so I honestly don’t know anything about it other than it is compared to Gone Girl. I’m not a fan of that book so I’m not sure if this would be one I’d be interested in. Thank you to the publisher for surprising me with a review copy though.

  12. Honeysuckle Dreams by Denise Hunter

35464451After Brady Collins’ ex-wife dies, he receives devastating news—his nine-month-old son Sam isn’t his son at all. And Sam’s wealthy maternal grandparents want custody of the child. Brady’s attorney tips him off that one major life change would virtually assure him of winning guardianship of baby Sam at the final hearing: an impending marriage. And his friend Hope is willing to step in as the loving and devoted fiance.

Local radio celebrity Hope Daniels has been driven by a solitary goal her entire life, and after a happy accident she’s finally offered her dream job. As Brady and Hope make sacrifices to help each other in their times of need, they risk uncovering a truth neither of them expects to find.

I really need to start reading Denise Hunter’s novels because I keep adding them to my bookshelf. Plus her covers are so pretty! I can’t wait to read this soon. Thank you to The Fiction Guild for my review copy.

But when her husband asks to reconcile, Savannah is faced with the hardest challenge of all: Forgiving the unforgivable. Somehow she must find freedom from the chains of their past and move forward, or face an unknown future without him.

I’ve been hearing great things about this novel as well as about Catherine West. This cover is gorgeous and I cannot wait to check this out soon. Thank you to The Fiction Guild for my review copy.
