About the Book:
Rainey Mitchell is doing just fine. She has a great job helping children in need, her family is around her, she is the mother of a fabulous little girl, and is getting over the betrayal of her ex-husband. Dr. Alex Murdock is not doing so well, as he is forced to work at a rural university, his life is full of secrets surrounding his family, and he has to start over in a new town. Luckily, Rainey, the daughter of his landlord, is there to get him settled. Rainey just wants to stay away from the new professor, who has the same charm as her ex. Unfortunately, they seem to need each other. Rainey needs his grant-writing ability to save her program, and Alex is terrible at the lecturing at which Rainey excels. The two must work together to fulfill their goals, but will they be able to do it? Rainey’s insecurities and Alex’s obsession with protecting his family could be their undoing.
Oh my goodness! If you haven’t read, “Charming the Troublemaker” yet, then you need to.
Pepper Basham takes us on a journey back to Ransom where we finally get to learn more about Rainey and Alex. Oh my goodness, I love these characters! Plus, I just found out this was a modern-day retelling of North & South by Elizabeth Gaskell. This fall even more in love with the book because that is one of my all-time period dramas and novel!
Alex is the good-looking rich kid who comes who is known as a flirt and makes reckless decisions, but there is so much more than meets the eye. #AdorkableAlex is one of my favorite male heroes in fiction. He is hilarious, compassionate and caring about those he cares about, and just wants a place where he feels like he belongs. Plus, it helps that he just needs that gentle nudging of helping him figure out how to be the hero he longs to be. He’s one of those guys that when he completely puts his heart in, he is in it until the very end. *Sigh* Alex is so swoon-worthy and I love him so much!
Rainey is one of those characters that you’d love to make your best friend. She genuinely cares about her friends and is protective of those she cares about. Well, except for the fact that she has no idea how much she is valued. She is a divorced single mother who is still learning that not all guys are like her ex-husband, Gray. Plus, she is completely independent so she doesn’t feel the need for a guy in life. Until Alex comes along that is. She also has an adorable six-year-old daughter named Sarah that’ll just eat you right up. Oh, and the way that Alex interacts with her will just make you fall even more madly in love.
And then there’s Mama Mitchell. She is the mother that you wish were yours. Not only is her cooking amazing, but she is full of wisdom and love that makes you want to open up to her.
Did I mention that this novel is so swoony? Pepper sure knows how to write those kissing scenes! I especially loved that Alex was a gentleman and wouldn’t let things go further than they should even though he struggled with controlling himself.
It’s also much more than just a romance. Pepper threw in some suspense too! How did she do it without making it a suspense novel is beyond me, but she did a great job with it! It adds to the fun for the reader.
This is a story about honesty, forgiveness, letting go of the past, and moving forward. The author also shows how security and life direction can only be found in Jesus Christ alone.
I loved absolutely everything about this story! If you’re looking for a laugh out loud romantic comedy, then you’ll want to read this as soon a possible. Plus, I can totally picture this as a Hallmark movie. Can we please make that happen? Okay, thanks.
