Melody Carlson is one of my absolute favorite authors! In fact, I have been following her books since I was in middle/high school. The Diary of a Teenage Girl series were the very first novels that I have ever read from her. When Revell offered up her latest for review, I jumped up and down excited that I would have the opportunity. Once Upon a Summertime is the very first book of her brand new series entitled Follow Your Heart. Anna Gordon starts out managing the Value Lodge, a small and not the most the exciting motel, in her hometown Springville. It’s a very safe choice for a young woman who is starting out her career, but as years go by, she feels stuck. Out of the blue, she gets the exciting opportunity to step forward into her career by moving to New York City where she applies for a management position at a fancy, stylish hotel called The Rothsberg. Coming from a small town, the city comes with many new challenges and lessons. What happens when Sean O’Neil, a once-upon-a-time crush, applies for the same position? You’ll walk through the streets alongside the characters in New York City.
It isn’t the best book on earth, but it certainly wasn’t the worst either. I had trouble connecting with the characters who seemed like they were too perfect. Neither of them made any mistakes. Sean O’Neil seems to be an overly perfect gentleman. He doesn’t even enter the story until around page 100. The ending is also quite abrupt. Instead of dating and spending time to get to know each other, it ends with a marriage proposal after just a few days of getting to know each other. I think there could have been a better solution.
What I really liked about the book is that Anna was willing to take on a new challenge, something that we all struggle with. She is a very hard worker and will keep going even when life throws curve balls and she wants to give up. If you like light, cheesy romances, then this is probably a suggested read for you.
