Prior to reading this, I had no idea what to expect. I was not at all familiar with Christine Johnson, but she proved to be an excellent author. It takes place in Key West, Florida so that caught my attention immediately. Key West is known as a vacation for many. Where else can you be 90 miles away from Cuba surrounded by both the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean at the same time, as well as gorgeous tropical views all around you? It is a town full of history that I would love to explore again one day.
After a hurricane hits Key West in 1846, Elizabeth is sent to live in Charleston, South Carolina with her aunt where she is forced to learn how to be a lady. Four years later, she returns home to Key West after her mother dies. She is determined to transform herself into the perfect Southern belle her parents always wished her to be. However, events happen that make it seem that it’s never going to happen. Her brother doesn’t seem to be happy she’s home, the slaves disobey her, and Rourke O’Malley, the attractive gentleman she vowed to forget, refuses to let go of his hold on her heart. Despite all of that, the evidence appears that her father is not who he says he is. This causes some painful emotions.
When the family secrets come to light, Elizabeth has a decision to make that will change her life forever. Will she choose to perform her duty and abandon her dreams or will she leave her life of privilege to chase the man her father sees as little better than a pirate?
It is so much more than just a historical romance novel. There are action and adventure. I mean, you might end up helping to rescue a slave from slavery after all! It is also a story of forgiveness and redemption. Haven’t we all been hurt by others that forgiveness is so hard to do? It’s a really hard lesson, but it will leave a deep impact on you much after you closed the book. Elizabeth also feels the weight of all that she has done wrong and how she can’t seem to do anything right, but she learns that she doesn’t have to be perfect. God loves her anyways.
